Discount, a second tax (e.g. CGST + SGST), prices with tax included

For prices quoted with VAT or GST in them: the tax is worked out of the total, not added on top.

The discount comes off the subtotal before tax, and both taxes are charged on (or, with prices that include tax, worked out of) the discounted amount.

Receipts for several months (one PDF)

The same for every month. Leave it empty to use the receipt's total.

Up to 12 months, such as April to March for one financial year. Each month gets its own page, receipt number and QR code, with the landlord, tenant, address, PAN, design and signature from the form above.

What each check is based on

For receipts you issue for your own business or property. Never create a receipt on behalf of a business you don't own, or for a payment that didn't happen — see our Terms.

A rent receipt for HRA is a monthly receipt, signed by your landlord, that proves you paid rent for the home you live in. Salaried employees in India submit these receipts to their employer (or keep them for their income tax return) to claim House Rent Allowance exemption under the old tax regime. Fill in the form above — landlord, tenant, property, rent month and amount — and download a receipt for your landlord to sign. Not claiming HRA, or renting outside India? Use the general rent receipt generator, made for landlords and property managers in any country.

What an HRA Rent Receipt Must Show

  • Landlord’s name (and address, if your employer asks for it)
  • Tenant’s name — the employee claiming HRA
  • Full address of the rented property
  • The month (or period) the rent covers
  • Rent amount in figures and in words
  • Payment mode — bank transfer, UPI, cheque or cash
  • Landlord’s PAN, when the annual rent is more than ₹1 lakh
  • Landlord’s signature

How to Make a Rent Receipt for HRA

  1. Enter the landlord and tenant names. Use the names exactly as they appear on the rental agreement.
  2. Add the property address and rent month. Create one receipt per month — most employers ask for monthly receipts.
  3. Enter the rent amount. The currency is already set to Indian rupees, and the amount is printed in words automatically.
  4. Add the landlord’s PAN. Needed when your total rent for the year is above ₹1,00,000 (about ₹8,333 a month).
  5. Download and get it signed. Download the PDF, print it, and ask your landlord to sign it. Many employers ask for a revenue stamp on receipts for rent paid in cash above ₹5,000 — check your employer’s instructions.

Important Rules to Know

The landlord must sign. A rent receipt is your landlord’s confirmation that they received the money. You can prepare it, but the details must be true and the landlord must check and sign it.

Landlord PAN above ₹1 lakh a year. If your annual rent is more than ₹1,00,000, employers ask for the landlord’s PAN. If the landlord has no PAN, employers usually accept a signed declaration from the landlord instead.

Old tax regime only. HRA exemption can only be claimed under the old tax regime; it is not available under the new regime.

Keep proof of payment. Paying rent by bank transfer, UPI or cheque creates a record that supports your receipts if the tax department ever asks.

Who This Template Is For

Salaried employees in India who pay rent and claim HRA, and landlords who want to give their tenants a clean monthly receipt. For rent receipts outside India, use the general rent receipt generator.

Can I make rent receipts for the whole year at once?

Yes — change the Rent Month and download one receipt per month. Each receipt still needs the landlord’s signature and must match rent you actually paid.

Is a rent receipt enough to claim HRA?

Employers usually also ask for a rental agreement and, above ₹1 lakh of annual rent, the landlord’s PAN. Keep bank or UPI records of your payments as well.

Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?

Many people do, if the parent owns the house and you genuinely pay rent to them. The parent then has to show that rent as income in their own tax return. If you are unsure, check with a tax adviser.

Do I need a revenue stamp?

A ₹1 revenue stamp is commonly required on receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000. For rent paid by bank transfer or UPI, many employers don’t ask for one — follow your employer’s HR or payroll instructions.
