A receipt must be given immediately when rent is paid in person, and within 15 days when it is paid any other way. A written request for receipts for personal-check payments lasts for the whole tenancy unless the tenant says otherwise.
If rent has not been received within five days of the due date, the landlord must send the tenant a written notice by certified mail; not sending it can be used as a defense in a nonpayment case.
